China’s transitions should not freak us out

Chinese transitions might be painful within China, but until they are completed the country's role as an enduring economic superpower must be questioned

In December 2014 I wrote a column for Financial News noting the 25th anniversary of the great Tokyo market crash of 1989, after which all traces of Japan’s decade-long standing as an emerging economic superpower disappeared for ever.

The piece, which can be found here, compared Japan's rapid post-war economic development and vulnerabilities with China, which had followed a similar economic strategy and was now facing similar difficulties.
