Citigroup has re-hired Nathan Sheets to lead its global economics team seven years after he departed the bank to work under former US president Barack Obama.

The economics veteran has been named global chief economist at the US bank, Citi said in a statement announcing his appointment. He replaces Catherine Mann, who left in May after three years in the role.
