Investment bankers are not known for their charitable approach to money, but last year the 43,000 who work in the corporate and investment bank at Citigroup effectively worked for free.

The size of the $7.8bn surprise settlement over the WorldCom scandal and increase in reserves against future litigation announced by the US bank last week is eye-watering. It will hit staff at Citigroup where it hurts when they put it into context.
