City of London votes to remove slavery-era statues from the Square Mile

Statues of slavery financiers William Beckford and Sir John Cass will be removed from the City's Great Hall and Guildhall

Proposals to remove two statues from buildings in the City of London have been approved by local lawmakers, as the City seeks to distance itself from the finance sector’s historic associations with slavery.

A taskforce set up to tackle racism in the Square Mile made recommendations in December that the City of London’s governing body remove its statue of William Beckford from the Great Hall, and a statue of Sir John Cass in the Guildhall.
