Clichés on earnings calls are bad news for stock investors — study

New research suggests that chief executives’ use of tired and hackneyed phrases should raise suspicions for analysts and investors

Stock analysts should have heard alarm bells when Bob Greifeld, who at the time was chief executive of Nasdaq, answered an innocuous question on an earnings call in 2012.

Asked about the intentions of Borse Dubai, which had a 16% stake in the exchanges group, Greifeld said it had shown its intention to be a long-term holder in “every way, shape or form”.
