Clifford Chance, the magic circle law firm that counts the UK’s biggest banks among its clients, is being investigated by the legal regulator over a controversial litigation financing deal, according to two people familiar with the matter.

The investigation relates to Clifford Chance's conduct in a $1.6bn case that took place in 2013, and relationships between the partner leading the case and one of the funders of the litigation.
