The collapse of merger talks between Deutsche Bank and Commerzbank may yet pave the way for one of the cross-border banking tie-ups that eurozone authorities have long called for.

But the German government, which tried and failed to engineer a deal between the country’s two largest lenders, holds the key to whether such a pan-European deal will take place.
