The coronavirus crisis has prompted profit-hungry short sellers to ramp up exposure to vulnerable sectors or bank profits on existing holdings, with the number of positions disclosed to the UK regulator spiking during the recent market sell-off.

Global markets had one of their worst weeks since 2008 at the end of February, with billions of dollars wiped from the value of the world’s largest listed companies.
