European companies are rushing to issue hybrid bonds, a unique mix of debt and equity which ease the strain on the balance sheet.

However, rating agency Moody's Investors Service has warned that there are limits to their usefulness. Companies that need to alleviate cashflow pressures can issue these bonds when refinancing existing senior unsecured debt to improve or avoid a deterioration in their financial ratios.
