Credit derivatives set for boom

Fund managers are poised to greatly expand their portfolios

Despite calls for more caution in the credit derivatives market from institutions such as the Financial Services Authority, the UK watchdog, it will be used more widely than ever in 2003, according to service providers.

Credit derivatives ease the transfer and repackaging of credit risk. The market for instruments that allow participants to hedge their credit risk, particularly by using credit default swap contracts, has ballooned in the past two years.
