In the refined world of Swiss banking, ugly accusations of racism are ripping through the industry.

The row erupted last week after an article in The New York Times alleged that former Credit Suisse chief executive Tidjane Thiam was the victim of racism, prompting soul searching in the industry — as well as a backlash among some who believe Thiam’s downfall had nothing to do with race.
