It has all come as a terrible shock to the Credit Suisse board. Yet the tragic public relations disaster that has engulfed the bank in the last few weeks was only too predictable, according to current and former employees.

Not that they predicted this particular outcome. Nobody could have forecast the extraordinary chain of events that led to the apparent suicide of a security consultant after a bungled act of corporate espionage.
