Hedge funds invested in cryptocurrencies, such as bitcoin, returned more than 3,000% last year, as interest from both established investors and less sophisticated speculators caused the digital asset to soar.

The HFR Cryptocurrency Index, which tracks managers trading cryptocurrencies, recorded a 3,175% increase over 2017, having gained 88.37% in December alone.
