Custodians in eleventh hour technology challenge

Asset servicing firms expect confusion over US tax evasion rules to result in last-minute delivery of systems

Custodians are being forced to develop flexible technology to accommodate continuing uncertainty about new US tax evasion rules, even as the deadline for their implementation draws close.

The final requirements of the Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act, signed into US law in 2010, were issued on January 18 this year and will come into force on January 1, 2014. However, several delays and a continuing lack of clarity are causing concern.
