A ruling on transatlantic data transfers by Europe’s top court could cause significant back-office disruption to banks — but only if regulators come down hard on firms that break the rules.

Banks must now gauge how severely data regulators will respond to the judgement from the European Court of Justice, according to experts from Magic Circle law firms, banks and research centres.
