Euphoria breeds complacency, especially when markets are riding high and economic projections keep getting revised up

Another year, another World Economic Forum passes. As the delegates start to thaw out, it’s a good time to reflect.

Firstly, there was a clear awareness of the irony of the world’s so-called elite meeting up to talk about how unequal many societies are becoming. It’s easy to dismiss the event as hypocrisy. That the event – up a mountain, in Switzerland, in the depths of winter — is a symbol for how remote (literally) and far removed the great and good are from wider society.
