Citigroup is in the midst of a cost-cutting exercise that will eventually see 20,000 of the Wall Street bank’s employees depart. So its bankers were expecting bonuses to be poor this year.

But the size of the drop left many unhappy — it was around 20% lower than the already bad payout they’d had in 2022.
