A long-standing adviser to Goldman Sachs in Europe, who defended bankers' bonuses at the height of the financial crisis, has stepped down after nearly 30 years at the investment bank.

Conservative peer Lord Griffiths of Fforestfach was former UK Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher's policy chief from 1985 to 1990, before going on to become a peer and take a role with Goldman Sachs.
