Deutsche Bank and Commerzbank have begun formal merger talks after months of speculation that Germany's two biggest lenders were destined for a tie-up.

Deutsche said on March 17 that it is “engaging in discussions with Commerzbank” but that there “is no certainty that any transaction will occur”. Commerzbank added the banks have “agreed today to start discussions with an open outcome on a potential merger”.
