Deutsche Bank fears Commerzbank merger if turnaround fails — report

Germany's largest lender has been in cost-cutting and restructuring mode since last May

Deutsche Bank’s leaders expect a government-brokered merger with rival Commerzbank by mid-year if the German bank’s restructuring plan fails, according to a report.

Ahead of the lender’s results on Friday, executives are concerned that a merger may be their only option if serious improvements are not made in the first three months of 2019. The Bloomberg report cited people briefed on those executives’ thinking.
