The prime minister's spokesperson has declined to deny that Boris Johnson contemplated firing health secretary Matt Hancock in early 2020 at the onset of the Covid crisis.

It follows a series of damning allegations concerning actions taken by Hancock in response to the Covid-19 pandemic made by the prime minister’s former adviser Dominic Cummings to MPs on the Science and Technology Committee on 26 May.
