ECB confirms end to bond buying programme

The end of QE comes as ECB officials have played down concerns about the recent economic slowdown

The European Central Bank confirmed it would phase out its giant bond-buying program next month, closing the chapter on a period of extraordinary activism by one of the world’s major central banks.

But the bank softened the move by pledging to hold its €2.6tn ($2.9tn) stock of bonds for “an extended period of time past the date when it starts raising the key ECB interest rates,” according to a statement published on Thursday.
