ECB takes control of Italy’s Banca Carige

CEO and chair stay on as ‘temporary administrators’ to pursue a return to solvency

Banca Carige, Italy’s 10th-largest lender, has had its stock trading suspended and its management temporarily taken over by European regulators after the majority of its board resigned on January 2.

The European Central Bank appointed three temporary administrators and a surveillance committee to ensure stable running of the lender and its 482 branches. Two of the ECB administrators are the bank’s current chief executive and chair.
