Emerging markets payments ‘require more regulation'

The retail payments and remittances markets have burgeoned in several emerging markets during the past decade, including India, Africa and Latin America

The emerging markets payments services industry requires greater regulation, according to a senior banker at this year’s Sibos.

Speaking at a panel session exploring opportunities for transaction banking in emerging markets, Eric Modave, chief operating officer for Barclays Africa, noted the enormous potential in emerging markets and in particular Africa for retail and small and medium enterprise payments but added that better regulation of the market was required as growth in these regions entered its next phase.
