EMI-Time Warner merger plans abandoned to pave way for AOL

EMI Group and Time Warner have withdrawn plans for a merger in a move which could help secure regulatory clearance for America Online's (AOL) acquisition of Time Warner.

The combination of EMI and Time Warner would have created the world's biggest music group but European regulators were concerned that a subsequent deal proposed by AOL to take over the enlarged Time Warner would leave too little competition in the market for music over the internet.
