Prime Minister Boris Johnson is expected to address the nation at 8pm, following a statement earlier on 4 January that tougher measures were imminent. A Downing Street spokesperson said: "The spread of the new variant of Covid-19 has led to rapidly escalating case numbers across the country."

Prime Minister Boris Johnson is expected to announce fresh lockdown restrictions for England later this evening as the new coronavirus variant surges across the country.

Johnson is expected to address the nation at 8pm, following a statement earlier on 4 January that tougher measures were imminent.
