The European Union and the UK government may be about to clinch a deal on financial services that looks like another step on the path of diminished expectations London has followed in the last few months.

The mooted deal would also help defuse the political tension that flared around the key question of the role London will or won’t play at the heart of European finance. And it should at least give City players more predictability as they prepare for Brexit in five months’ time.
