It’s been a tough year for ESG. The swift regulatory response to allegations of greenwashing has spooked asset managers.

“When you've got German authorities raiding offices, or big-ticket fines for American fund managers, you don't want that. It's not good for your reputation,” said Brandon Horwitz, a senior adviser at Fund Boards Council, a group that represents fund directors.
