Brussels has accused eight banks of collusion in the €10tn European government bond markets, kick-starting a formal process that carries the threat of more big fines for the sector.

The European Commission said on January 31 that it has formed a preliminary view that the banks, which it did not name, had sought to “distort competition when acquiring and trading European government bonds”.
