Vodafone AirTouch has agreed to sell Orange and promised to give competitors fair-priced access to its mobile network to win European Union approval for the £113bn takeover of Mannesmann.

The European Commission (EC) today cleared the merger, on the condition that Orange and all its subsidiaries be demerged as a stand-alone business.
