EU considers imposition of gender quotas

The number of women on the boards of European companies may be increasing, but the pace of change will have to accelerate dramatically if the corporate world is to ward off mandatory quotas being imposed by the European Union

Kay Swinburne, a member of the European Parliament and a co-ordinator on the Economic and Monetary Affairs Committee, said: “There is a firm belief in the corridors of power within the European Commission that, rightly or wrongly, lack of diversity at board level exacerbated the financial crisis.

They will need to be convinced that change is happening and quickly enough. If there isn't a genuine shift in the next few years, then the EU will impose a quota."
