Fund closure fears after EC law change

Industry braces for the closure of money market funds after the European Commission brings in new capital buffers

Widespread closures of money market funds are predicted after the introduction of new European regulations that require investment managers to hold a minimum capital buffer in case of a run on the funds.

The European Commission today introduced new capital buffers that give money market funds operating under the constant net asset value, or CNAV, model three years to build up a buffer of 3% of the fund's total value.
