EU softens stance on company disclosure rules

The European Commission has unveiled new proposals on disclosure of financial information requiring companies to publish quarterly reports, which appear less stringent than previously feared.

The proposals, known as the transparency directive, are designed to tighten investor protection and help restore confidence in the wake of recent financial scandals. The new rules, released on Wednesday, will strengthen disclosure requirements on significant developments such as important changes in shareholdings.
