Banca Monte dei Paschi di Siena was always going to be the villain of the European stress-test show, but other banks did get unwelcome supporting roles.

Italy's oldest and weakest bank managed to comprehensively fail a test that has no official pass mark: When stress leaves you with negative equity, as it did for Monte dei Paschi, action is absolutely needed.
