Europe and US strike derivatives deal

Agreement acknowledges that some rules are 'essentially identical'

The European Union's executive arm struck a last-minute deal with the Commodity Futures Trading Commission over controversial US derivatives rules that were to enter into force Friday.

The deal, in which the two regulators agreed to accept some of their rules as "essentially identical," signifies a warming of relations since last month, when the EU's top financial regulator Michel Barnier described the CFTC's approach as "flawed."
