European investment banks have cut thousands of jobs in the US since the financial crisis in a desperate attempt to return their American operations to reasonable health. The likes of UBS, Royal Bank of Scotland and Barclays have all scaled back dramatically. But could the great retreat be coming to an end?

There will surely be further cuts at some banks, notably RBS. However, expectations that there will be big cuts elsewhere could prove wide of the mark.
