European pension tax harmonisation moves closer to reality

The European Court of Justice's judgement in the so-called Danner case on the taxation of pensions in Europe, brings the prospect of cross border pensions savings closer to reality.

The court ruled that Finnish tax provisions, which prohibit tax relief on voluntary contributions from Finnish taxpayers to a foreign scheme are contrary to Community Law. The ruling will be a significant boost to reformers who have long been pressing for the breakdown of tax barriers between member states.
