European policymakers set sights on banking transparency

Sharon Bowles, the chairman of the powerful European Union Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs, has attacked the lack of transparency in the financial sector, arguing that institutions' resistance to disclose information on the grounds of commercial sensitivity "would not wash forever".

Hedge funds have used this argument as a basis to counter proposals in the US to subject them to greater scrutiny, while banks have resisted disclosure requirements on the same grounds.
