Public spats between senior financiers are rare, so when Paul Tucker, the former deputy governor of the Bank of England, heckled UBS chief executive Sergio Ermotti at a conference this week, it was a startling moment.

No surprise that the flashpoint was bankers' pay and taxpayer bailouts — subjects that still arouse passion, nine years on from 2008's crisis.
