Exchange challenge gathers pace on Wall Street

Citigroup, Credit Suisse First Boston, Fidelity Brokerage and Lehman Brothers last night signed an agreement to launch an electronic stock market with the Boston Stock Exchange in a bid to limit damage from higher trading costs caused by consolidation of US exchanges.

They will create a new venture called the Boston Equities Exchange. It will be led by Mike Curran, chairman and chief executive of the Boston Stock Exchange.
