Experts hunt for ways to drive out white elephants

Multinationals are pushing to bring performance-related pay into public projects

The great white shark might be the terror of the deep, but it is white elephants that prey on the minds of those working on infrastructure projects in the developing world.

There are herds of these across the southern hemisphere, derided for being expensive and ultimately useless (apparently the expression stems from the sacred Burmese albino elephants, which require lavish attention but can do no work).
