Express Dairies pension fund hit by shortfall

Express Dairies will be forced to top up its £300m company pension fund, following the discovery of a £7m shortfall.

Changes to valuation methods and the abolition of advance corporation tax (ACT) credits in 1997 have been largely blamed for the problem, which emerged when Express Dairies completed the first valuation of its fund since the demerger from Northern Foods in 1998.
