Chris Walker, head of institutional business at Scottish Widows, had a bit of a shock at the Cartier International Polo Championships in Windsor last month. Trying to find their way to the Scottish Widows table for lunch, he and his guest were misdirected by a Guards Polo Club staff member to a smallish marquee at one side of the field. Noting that it was surrounded by hedges on two sides, Walker and his friend were told to just go in through the flaps at the back, and found themselves in front of the only table there, which was being set up for the Queen's luncheon party with gilded chairs and elaborate napery. Walker's guest was concerned by this clear breach of security - what if they had been terrorists? They could have poisoned the Queen's food or planted a bomb. But Walker was tempted to stay and see if they could just somehow blend in and join the royal party. Finally, after much persuasion, his friend managed to drag him away toward the right marquee before they were arrested for trespass - or worse.
