Antonio Fazio, the beleaguered governor of the Bank of Italy, is to be questioned by Rome prosecutors this week as part of an investigation into financial irregularities relating to Banca Popolare Italiana's takeover bid for rival Banca Antonveneta.

Achille Toro, one of the prosecutors leading the investigation, told Reuters "at the moment" Fazio had not been placed on the register of those under investigation.
