What a start. You accept one of the biggest jobs in UK financial services, and six days later the House of Commons is debating a no confidence motion on the institution you have just agreed to run.

It is an indication of how big a task Andrew Bailey has taken on in becoming chief executive of the Financial Conduct Authority. But after a worldwide search lasting months, the UK Chancellor, George Osborne, may have found someone who is up to the job.
