A lawyer who made his name helping the government navigate the financial crisis has been confirmed as the next chairman of the UK's markets watchdog, according to a statement from the Treasury today.

Charles Randell, a former partner at law firm Slaughter and May, will take over as chair of the Financial Conduct Authority and the Payment Systems Regulator at the start of April. He succeeds John Griffiths-Jones in both roles.
