FCA criticised for ban on short-selling of Italian and Spanish stocks

It follows similar steps by Consob, the Italian financial regulator, and Spain’s Comisión Nacional del Mercado de Valores

The UK’s Financial Conduct Authority has issued a temporary ban on the short-selling of mainly Spanish and Italian stocks traded in London, as markets around the world continue to spiral downwards because of the spread of Covid-19.

But proponents of the strategy have criticised the move, saying it will do little to stabilise markets.
