Fiat yesterday played down continued talk that it was about to announce a strategic alliance with DaimlerChrysler, or any other leading international car group, as its shares remained the focus of attention on the Milan stock exchange, reports the Financial Times.

Fiat appears to have become the target of speculation on a huge scale, largely prompted by the growing phenomenon of internet online trading and stockpicking in Italy.
