Paul Newman, the late American actor, has beaten film stars Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie to the number one spot of the most generous US celebrity philanthropists in 2008.

In a recent survey by The Giving Back Fund published in US celebrity magazine Parade this month, Paul Newman topped the third annual "Giving Back 30", having donated nearly $21m to his Newman's Own Foundation, before his death last year.
