Finance heads in attendance at Saudi Arabia’s answer to Davos kicked off the week in sombre mood. Speakers warned of risks to the global economy from disruptive technologies and a political environment that puts capitalism on trial.

The kingdom’s high-profile Future Investment Initiative was overshadowed last year by the murder of Saudi dissident journalist Jamal Khashoggi, with many top executives pulling out in protest.
